Guidance and advice for Syleham residents
Following the flooding experienced by residents in December 2020 and the heavy snow in 2021 Syleham Parish Council has put together an online resource of advice and guidance to support residents. This information can be found below.
FLOODING
Q1. How can I check if my home is at risk of flooding?
You can check the risk of flooding where you live at the following link Environment Agency.
Q2. If my home is at risk of flooding, what can I do in advance?
The Environment Agency recommends that every home completes a ‘Personal Flood Plan’. This flood plan guides homeowners through what to do in advance of flooding so when a flood happens damage to property and risks to individuals are minimised. A copy of the plan can be found by clicking on personal flood plans . The Met Office also provides information on how to protect your property from flooding. And the fire service provides flood safety advice.
Q3. Where can I find information on where to buy sandbags and flood protection products?
Blue Pages is an independent directory of property flood products and services to help reduce the risk of flooding to your home or business.
Q4. How do I report a flood?
You can report a flood to Suffolk County Council here. If your home is flooded and you need help call 999.
Q5. Can I receive flood warnings?
Yes. The National Floodline Service provides text alerts to homeowners. To sign up for the service call the National Floodline on 0345 988 1188 (24-hour service). You can also sign up for flood warnings at Gov.uk.
Q6. Who leads on flood plans in my area?
Babergh and Mid-Suffolk District Councils are responsible for flood planning and risk assessment. Strategic flood plans can be accessed here
Q7. How can Syleham Parish Council help?
If you are in immediate danger, contact the emergency services by dialing 999. The Parish Council is able to mobilise volunteers to help residents and has access to equipment such as sandbags, pumps and can call on residents who have earth moving equipment.

The Met Office provides weather warnings for severe weather including heavy snow.

Suffolk County Council provides advice on protecting yourself and your home and also travel advice on its website www.suffolk.gov.uk (use the search term Seasonal Winter).

If you are in immediate danger, call the emergency services on 999. The Parish Council is able to mobilise volunteers if vehicles are stuck in snowdrifts or if residents need emergency medicines and are unable to leave home. Contact Malcolm Flounders, chairman of the Parish Council on 07967 677209.

If a tree or hedge poses an immediate danger to public safety call 0345 6066171. If the tree is blocking a trunk road call Highways England on 0300 123 5000.
